TELEFUNKEN Partners with Dysonics For 8-Capsule 360 Degree Mic for VR

Dysonics Creates Immersive Spatial Audio Tracking Headphone Experience

South Windsor, CT, November 2015 – TELEFUNKEN Elektroakustik is proud to partner with Dysonics for the revolutionary 8-capsule, 360-degree microphone array for immersive audio and VR capture. Using the Samsung Gear platform, the system features the first-ever solution that combine 360° motion-tracked audio with 360° video.

Dysonics has produced demos based on captures of various locations around San Francisco and has been called “the future of sound technology” by Gizmodo. In recent months, the San Francisco startup has worked with Virgin America, Delta and major Hollywood studios to bring air travelers enhanced surround sound versions of “Game of Thrones,” “Mad Max: Fury Road,” “Terminator Genisys,” and many other popular features.

“We think anyone tracking immersive audio will want to sample this technology,” said Bill Ryan, Design Engineer at TELEFUNKEN. “Dysonics is an ideal partner for us as we push forward into exciting new opportunities to deliver sound to recording professionals and audiophiles alike.”

“It’s been great collaborating with Bill and his team,” said Bob Dalton, CTO, Dysonics. “We are confident that our combined efforts have created a best-of-breed solution for immersive audio and VR capture.”

Dysonics leverages over 15 years of research in human audio perception to deliver the most lifelike and immersive sound possible. At the core of the offering is Dysonics’ proprietary technology microphone RondoMic, a patented mic array that houses eight custom omni-directional TELEFUNKEN M60 FET microphones that capture sound environments in 360 degrees.

RondoMic is able to pick up room acoustics with incredible accuracy. Then, via patented spatial and motion-tracking audio software, Dysonics is able to stitch the eight recordings together in real time and faithfully reproduce those room acoustics over headphones. The result is an authentic and pristine audio experience that truly makes listeners feel like they’re there live.

Utilizing a unique proprietary circuit topology, the M60 FET amplifier produces an

exceptional transient response and SPL handling capabilities. Carefully selected and tested components are hand-plugged into gold-plated circuit board traces to provide an ultra-clean true Class A discrete amplifier with a frequency response of +/- 2dB from 20Hz to 50 kHz. The output is matched with a custom American-made transformer that offers an especially low self-noise and a typical THD+N of 0.015% or better, making it ideal for critical recording applications. The TK61 capsule features a 6-micron gold-sputtered membrane measuring 15mm in diameter, and offers a large, open sound perfect for capturing the ambience of a recording environment.

ABOUT DYSONICS

As headphones are now the most widely used form of listening to media, the Dysonics mission is to transform the headphone listening experience by making it more lifelike and immersive. For more than fifteen years, the core Dysonics team has pursued academic research in human audio perception and spatial sound capture/reproduction, culminating in a number of patented technologies. Based in San Francisco, the privately held company is comprised of research and industry visionaries who have worked with UC Davis, Stanford University, University of Texas, Microsoft, Adobe and Live Nation. In 2012, Dysonics emerged from the UC Davis technology incubator (ETTC) to bring to market a revolution in 3D audio and motion tracking for headphones. Dysonics was recently featured in the immersive audio portion of the Björk exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Dysonics’ technology has won solid reviews from Gizmodo, Engadget, VentureBeat, PandoDaily, The Next Web, Tom’s Guide and SlashGear. For more info visit: www.dysonics.com.
