Alan Evans Trio – “I’m Coming Home”

AE3

On November 18th, 2013, the Alan Evans Trio stopped by TELEFUNKEN Studios to test out the new DD5 Dynamic Drum microphone pack. Joined by Danny Meyer on electric guitar and Beau Sasser on organ and clavinet, drummer and vocalist Alan Evans lead his band through a 25+ minute set of soulful and funky originals, as well as covers from Sly & The Family Stone, Charles Hilton Brown and Jimi Hendrix.

The entire performance was recorded live via the studios API 1608 console into Pro Tools HD, in one take, with no overdubs. Every single channel was tracked using a TELEFUNKEN microphone, including the DD5 Dynamic Drum pack on drum set. The Kick drum features the M81-SH mounted inside, with the M82 outside the drumhead. The M80-SH was utilized on snare drum, with the M81-SH on toms and electric guitar cab. In addition the CU-29 Copperhead was utilized on the electric guitar cab, and a pair of M81 dynamics in ORTF configuration are included for room mics. The Leslie speaker of the C3 organ was recorded with two M80-SH on top and the M82 positioned on the low end. A DI was also used for the clavinet.

Alan Evans – the co-founder, writer and drummer of Soulive – proudly presents his newest creation: the Alan Evans Trio. The band is anchored by a sound that is both hard-driving and groovy with deep, funky melodies and powerful, rhythmic counter-play. Mention the name Alan Evans to a room full of music lovers, and you will get a consensus nod to one of the most celebrated and tenacious drummers in the jazz, funk, and soul scene. Alan has literally been playing drums since the age of two, and like all great musicians, he is constantly writing and playing music-pushing the boundaries above and beyond “industry standard” and creating the rules as he goes along, making art in its purest form…music that pleases him and his fans.

“I’m Coming Home” was a song in an ongoing monthly contest co-hosted with Indaba Music. The top ten mixes were determined by popular vote, with the winning mix judged by the artist and TELEFUNKEN’s staff members.
