South Windsor, CT, January 2025 – Powerhouse synth-rock band Doom Flamingo recently filmed a series of exclusive videos at the TELEFUNKEN Soundstage in the Connecticut company headquarters. The band is a soulful sextet with a shape-shifting twist to their songwriting. Powerful guitar riffs and a laidback style combine with haunting soundscapes like classic sci-fi films. Hailing from Charleston, South Carolina, the band features searing vocals with otherworldly instrumentation.
Band manager and spokesperson Bryan Austin commented on the performance, “It was a real treat recording this session for ‘Live From the Lab’ and to see the inner workings of Telefunken. Their founder Toni Fishman was a voracious listener and archivist who meticulously collected vintage microphones, amplifiers, consoles and recordings. The company is now faithfully restoring and preserving vintage gear and using it as a template for new hardware. The band was able to revisit their new ‘Measurements’ EP on a gorgeous soundstage through worldclass microphones run through an array of vintage amps.”
The entire LIVE FROM THE LAB music video series is tracked live with an array of TELEFUNKEN microphones and feature performances from a variety of local, regional, national, and international artists and ensembles.
Guitarist, Thomas Kenney commented, “Getting to record in the Telefunken studio was an awesome experience. Making music surrounded by this history, the gear, and the professionals running the operation was as good as it gets. Seeing behind-the-scenes work in the production facility was beyond cool.”
Keyboardist Ross Bogan added, “It was a real honor to be invited to Telefunken HQ to record our songs. So many historic records and performances started with their technical ingenuity. They gave us a full tour and I was blown away at the precision and care that goes into making their mics. They also celebrate Croc Friday!”
Doom flamingo was formed in 2018 when their bassist was looking for an after-party act for his other band, Umphrey’s McGee and helped assemble a cast of Charleston’s best jazz-jam-funk musicians, including Kanika Moore, keyboardist Ross Bogan, and guitarist Thomas Kenney. After the tracking session, vocalist Kanika Moore said, “I had no idea what we’d be getting into for this session. Thanks to our team and Telefunken, I had one of the most amazing live studio recordings I’ve experienced with Doom Flamingo. Not only were we given a tour, I was also gifted my first custom mic in flamingo pink. My experience with this mic has just begun, but I’ve been taking it everywhere. It’s a great mic and it’s cute. What else could I ask for?”
Ace drummer Sean Bing commented, “My experience at Telefunken was nothing short of amazing. From the moment I walked in until the moment we left I could feel the strong energy that place contained. In fact, I remember when our team told us about the opportunity, I knew that it was going to be a legendary experience that I didn’t want to miss while on tour. One of the coolest parts about that day was getting to record in their astonishing studio — from the big hot spotlights to the beautiful carpets, the high ceilings, the big disco ball hanging from the middle of the room, along with the tour of the facility and their amazing staff. To top it all off at the end they gifted us all our own M80 mics to take on the road with us! I love that mic so much and the technology in that mic speaks for itself. I couldn’t be happier and will be singing the praises for Telefunken for years to come!
Bassist Tim Khayat added, “I had an amazing time recording at Telefunken — the whole team was really a joy to work with. The facilities were incredible and very inspiring to work in. We even got a private tour of their manufacturing factory, which was fascinating. I would do it again in a heartbeat!”
The multitrack audio files from the sessions are available for free download via clickable links below the individual performance videos. All audio files are presented in .WAV format and were recorded at 24bit / 48KHz sample rate. They are clearly labeled in the same format with the source listed first (LEAD VOX, ACOUSTIC, PIANO), followed by the microphone used (C12, AR-51, etc.) and can be downloaded and imported into your Digital Audio Workstation of choice.
Doom Flamingo FOH engineer Mikey Foley summed it up, “I think I was grinning the entire time I was inside the building — there was just as much humility as there was creativity, ingenuity, and magic. The grand tour cast light on their meticulous commitment to providing quality products. Everything is made in house, in that building, by human hands. Each component is tested, soldered point-to-point, and assembled by friendly faces with passionate personalities behind them.
“As the band sets up, I find the engineer in the tracking booth and am immediately met with a Santa’s workshop display of some of the most renowned and sought-after equipment the music world has ever known: API channel strips, full Neve desks, racks upon racks of 1081s and 1073s, Distressors and LA-2As, and the golden goose of their faithful recreations: The Fairchild 670. Like their namesake, they’ve taken the revered technology of the past and through love and passion, stopped it from going defunct, and thrown themselves into recreating and modernizing some of the world’s best gear.
“Hearing the gain staging alone of Sean’s rack and floor toms pumping through M81s into the raw percussive power of the API channel strips was enough to convince me that my current mic pack was lacking. I was blown away by the expanse of the blank canvas the sound provided and found myself filled with new excitement to mix the next show, imagining how I could sculpt new sounds on the next live album we’ll produce with Telefunken gear.
“Telefunken is a name that has a powerful reputation and a certain mystery. Their microphones show superior build quality and a uniquely classy sound. Rolling up to HQ, we were immediately met with the friendly faces we feel we’ve known forever. The team threw open the doors and were jumping at the opportunity to get into the magic of our band’s road dynamic. They know us, the drive, the balance and the reason; they know the music. I am incredibly grateful for the look inside the madness of their musical passion and am reminded of the magic of the experience every time I position a Telefunken mic for a show or session. Cheers Telefunken and thank you for keeping the musical magic going.”
